FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
What do an antique porcelain doctor’s scale from the office of two well-known physicians from the past, a vintage Farmville Hardware sign, and a collectible woven coverlet representing Farmville have in common? They will all be auctioned off at the Sesquicentennial Fundraising Auction on Saturday, October 9. The event will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at South Main Street between Wilson and Church Streets with the outdoor auction beginning at 6p.m.
“As we begin to observe Farmville’s 150th anniversary celebration, we are bringing back the popular St. Patrick’s Day Auction that we used to hold about 15 years ago,” says Lori Drake, the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce and member of the 150th Anniversary Planning Committee.
According to Drake, this time the auction will be held in the fall of 2021 to help provide funding for the 150th anniversary events in 2022 including First Friday Fireworks on January 7 and the Black-Tie Gala on Saturday, January 15. The Sesquicentennial Parade, with historic themed floats, will be held on Saturday, February 12 along with other festivities to mark 150 years since Farmville was incorporated in 1872.
Michael Cable of Woodside Antiques will oversee the auction, which also includes other items such as furniture, rugs, jewelry, and collectible coins. All proceeds will benefit the 150th Anniversary Celebration events through the Farmville Chamber of Commerce, which is a non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible.
“The Sesquicentennial Fundraising Auction will kick off our 150th Anniversary Events and we are excited to bring back this popular event,” says Drake. “And we are excited to initiate the Memorial Plaque Project where people can help support the Sesquicentennial, commemorate the event, and have their name included.”
Just Write Laser Engraving will engrave a commemorative plaque that will be a 44-inch-long map of the state of North Carolina with Farmville clearly marked. There is room on the plaque for 150 names and for $150, people can get their name, their family name, or their business name on the plaque. This beautiful piece will serve as a symbol of the Sesquicentennial Celebration, and it will become part of our town’s history and will be permanently displayed at the new Farmville Public Library.
